Perfect 3-Day Road Trip in Istanbul by Rental Car
Day 1: The Historical Peninsula & Galata
Start early at Sultanahmet before the crowds arrive. Work your way through Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace in the morning. Walk down to Eminönü for a classic balık ekmek (grilled fish sandwich) by the Bosphorus. Cross the Galata Bridge on foot in the afternoon and climb to Galata Tower for the best sunset view over the Golden Horn.
Parking tip: Do not try to drive directly into Sultanahmet — traffic is gridlocked and parking barely exists. Use one of the covered car parks near Eminönü and walk the 10 minutes uphill. Your blood pressure will thank you.
Day 2: The Bosphorus & the Asian Side
Cross the 15 July Martyrs Bridge into Asia. Drive to Moda in Kadıköy for a leisurely breakfast at one of the neighbourhood's beloved café terraces. Head up to Çamlıca Hill for a panoramic view across the entire city — on a clear day you can see both European and Asian shores at once. In the evening, park near Üsküdar and take the short ferry back to the European side for dinner.
Tip: The Asian side is noticeably calmer for driving than central Istanbul. Use this day to get comfortable with the car and the city rhythm before tackling busier routes.
Day 3: The Princes' Islands & Şile–Ağva
Park at the Bostancı waterfront and take the ferry to Büyükada (cars are not allowed on the island). Hire a bicycle rather than a horse-drawn carriage — it is cheaper, faster and far more enjoyable. Return by ferry in the late afternoon, then drive east along the Black Sea coast to Şile and Ağva for a peaceful evening by the water.
Alternative: If ferry schedules do not suit, skip the islands and drive the full coastal route directly to Şile — about 1.5 hours from the city centre — for an equally scenic and relaxed day trip.
Car Rental Recommendation for Istanbul
Istanbul traffic is notoriously dense and the streets in older neighbourhoods are genuinely narrow. For city driving, stick to a compact or small saloon — a Volkswagen Polo, Renault Clio or Fiat Egea will navigate the tight spaces far more comfortably than an SUV. Save the larger cars for road trips outside the city.
