The Complete Car Rental Guide for First-Timers

Renting a car for the first time can feel daunting — but it does not have to be. In this guide, we cover everything a first-time renter needs to know: the common surprises to watch out for, the documents to prepare, and the checks you should never skip.

1. What Is Car Rental?

Car rental gives you the right to drive a supplier's vehicle for an agreed period in exchange for a daily fee. In Turkey, options range from daily and weekly to monthly and annual contracts. In practice, daily and weekly rentals are by far the most popular choice.

2. Who Can Rent a Car?

Age and Driving Licence Requirements

• Minimum age: 21 years old (some luxury vehicles require 25–28)
• Licence duration: At least 1 year (2–5 years for certain vehicle categories)
• International guests: Valid licence + passport; an International Driving Permit (IDP) may be required depending on your country of issue

3. Booking Step by Step

4. What to Check When You Pick Up the Car

Take photos first. Before you accept the keys, photograph every panel of the car — front, rear, both sides, the roof and all four tyres. This protects you against any pre-existing damage being attributed to you at return.

• Check the exterior bodywork for scratches, dents and chips
• Read the existing damage noted on the handover form — and add anything that is missing
• Verify the fuel level — it should match what is stated in the contract
• Test the air conditioning, windows, lights and infotainment system
• Check the spare tyre, jack, warning triangle and first aid kit are all present
• Make sure the registration document and insurance policy are in the glove box

5. Insurance and Coverage Packages

This section is where most first-time renters make expensive mistakes — so read carefully.

Standard Collision Coverage (Basic Kasko)

Included in most standard packages. In the event of an accident, vehicle repair costs are partly covered by insurance — but you pay a deductible (excess) from your own pocket. Excess amounts typically run:

• Economy vehicles: 1,500–3,000 TL
• Mid-range: 3,000–5,000 TL
• Luxury: 5,000–10,000 TL

Super Cover (Comprehensive Coverage)

An additional daily charge (typically 50–150 TL/day) that reduces your excess to zero. If you have an accident, no repair costs come out of your pocket. Strongly recommended if you are driving in an unfamiliar city or planning a long road trip.

TGW (Tyre, Glass & Windscreen)

Standard coverage does not include tyres, glass, headlights or mirrors. The TGW package covers these for around 20–50 TL/day — worth adding if you are driving on rural or mountain roads where stone chips and kerb strikes are more likely.

6. The Deposit

At pick-up, the supplier will place a pre-authorisation hold on your credit card. This is not a charge — it is a temporary block that is released after a damage-free return.

• Deposit amounts: 2,000–15,000 TL depending on vehicle class
• Release time: 3–10 bank working days after return
• Any damage, traffic fines or fuel shortfalls will be deducted from this hold

Make sure your credit card has enough available credit before your trip. A debit card or prepaid card will usually not be accepted for the deposit.

7. Fuel Policy

Two main policies to know about:

• Full-to-Full (the standard): You collect with a full tank and return it full. Fill up at a petrol station close to the return office — this is the most economical option.
• Full-to-Empty: The supplier charges you upfront for a full tank; you return it empty. Avoid this arrangement — suppliers' fuel prices are substantially higher than petrol station rates.

If you return the car with insufficient fuel under a Full-to-Full agreement, expect an additional charge of 40–60 TL per litre plus a service fee.

8. During the Rental

• Observe speed limits: 50 km/h in town, 90–110 km/h on open roads, 120–140 km/h on motorways
• HGS/OGS motorway toll charges are tracked automatically and billed by the supplier after your rental ends
• Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs — this immediately invalidates all insurance cover
• Do not take the car abroad without explicit written permission from the supplier
• In an accident: call 112 first, take photos, complete the accident report form with the other party, then call the supplier's emergency line

9. Returning the Vehicle

• Aim to arrive at the return office at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time
• Top up the fuel beforehand — find a nearby petrol station in advance rather than rushing at the last minute
• Return the car reasonably clean; excessive dirt may incur a cleaning surcharge
• Insist on a joint inspection with a staff member and ask for a signed return confirmation

10. Cancellation and Refund Policy

• Standard bookings: free cancellation up to 48 hours before pick-up — full refund
